Tasmania Transmission Project Advances as Energy Transition Accelerates

A major transmission development in Tasmania has moved closer to delivery, with the proposed 240km Marinus Link transmission project progressing through key planning and approval stages.

The project is designed to increase electricity interconnection between Tasmania and mainland Australia, supporting the transfer of renewable energy and strengthening national energy reliability. It forms part of broader efforts to enable the transition to a lower-emissions energy system.

Once completed, the project is expected to play a significant role in unlocking Tasmania’s renewable energy capacity, including hydro and wind, and facilitating energy flow across the National Electricity Market.

As with many large-scale transmission projects, the development spans multiple regions and landholdings, bringing it into direct interface with a wide range of communities and stakeholders.

This highlights a growing reality across the energy sector: infrastructure projects of this scale are not only technical and regulatory exercises, but also deeply connected to how organisations engage with communities throughout planning and delivery.

Transmission projects in particular require engagement that extends beyond consultation — often involving long timeframes, multiple phases, and ongoing interaction with affected landholders and communities.

As projects like Marinus Link progress, engagement is increasingly recognised as a core component of delivery — alongside engineering, approvals and construction.
